Any username= in the fstab where it says guest on the client will get denied, unless it is for that user's share. Then in the fstab they need to be guest only. The shared folders on the server need to be owned by root and root as group and they need to be chmod 777. It was a permissions problem, that did not seem to affect windows. Reading the man pages I get the impression I should aim to use the name not the uid/gid as the right uid/gid (a number) may infact not be the user you think it is.

I seems zfs is not obstructing access to the shares to the windows machine.

I have tried accessing all three from the windows 10 machine, I can get to all three fine, Movies, music and Pictures. I CAN get to all three no problem, Movies Music and Pictures. I have tried accessing all three shares from the win7 laptop. no better with `sudo zfs sharesmbd=yes`, (did follow it with smbd restart on server and sudo mount-a on laptop) On the ubuntu server the files and folders have the right permissions, owners and groups. (prob vfat as it used to be plugged into a smart telly) The Pics and music folders however are on ubuntu's ZFS. Well the Movies folder is a straight forward disk with NTFS or VFAT or EXT4, can't recall which. On the server I have '# server min protocol = SMB1" hashed out- don't need it (not going through gvfs) and as above I can access the Movies folder without '-o vers=1.0' or '-o sec=ntlm' in the fstab on the mint laptop. The gid here maps to smbusers group on the server (don't know what it is on the laptop - is it mapped out to a different name by the client/laptop - is that the mistake?), Family members who have access to the above folders are in the group smbusers, and the group is set on all the folders. The uid here is me or 'chris' on both the mint laptop and the ubuntu server (Imean uid1000 is chris on both the laptop and the server). Rpismbconf.txt (12.82 KiB) Downloaded 22 timesĬode: Select all # access to the MOVIES folder I Think I need to have the same user on both machines - I don't understand what I am doing there - even if you have the same username it is not the same UID.

It does however let her see the Movies share without a password. It will not access any of the shares on the ubuntu/opteron, though it will present them.

It will access all the 4 folders on the rpi, but requires a password for them all, even though Pics and Musis are public.I will share the smb.conf from the rpi. I cannot get her off it to check against the ubuntu/opteron server. Readily Accesses all 4 shares, My folder, her folder, the pics, and the Music, on the RPi. Version Win7 i5 (second gen) ( she won't let me replace it with anything, especially not a Linux machine)

I have almost compared the rpi nas smb.conf to the ubuntu machine, almost. Bothe ubuntu server and mint laptop can successfully smbclient to the rpi nas. I am (re)learning samba and working through as a learning exercise on an old box before I get new kit to put a 'production' machine into service for the family. It has worked reliably, but it is time to upgrade. I have a RPI3 pLaying NAS to similar shares that I set up 7 years ago. (if you google the hostname it is the model number - it is an HP i5 8th generation)Īs an aside the opteron/ubuntu/server DOES successfully fstab client smb to another samba server. I have changed some settings in the laptop side too I added : On the mint laptop (Hostname=15-cx0009na) I see 2 entries for the server "PMS1" but neither opens, both just yield the above error (If you must know it is an amd opteron 185, yes old) Testparm works fine on smb.conf on both server and the client lapop I have made the right users and made them part of the sambausers group. There are drives behind the folders mounted successfully in fstab. I have made directories in /mnt/ and given the right permissions and groups to the folders. On the ubuntu server (it is a desktop not used for anything else ) hostname = PMS1 I am trying to access it from my Mint laptop.

I have a series of smb shares on a new/old ubuntu box.
